This among many other reasons is why couples need to be open and communicative with each other about everything. If the said couple had discussed things like this before the deterioration of health occured then it may have been a non issue because the husband could have given her his blessing or on the other hand doomed her to suffer as a testament of loyalty. I feel lucky to have who I have because Adam and I can talk openly about things like this.

Character vs Reputation argument is based on the deeply religious-rooted idea that it doesn't matter how others perceive you in this life, ones true nature will define your life after death (either via reincarnation or eternal afterlife).

In reality, your reputation is akin to your appearance. It will change throughout your life, in part due to your action or inaction. Your character, on the otherhand, is more like your weight. A good weight is healthy, and if you let your weight run to either extreme, it will be unhealthy. Likewise, a good character is found in balance and moderation, with extremes resulting in unhealthiness.

The plain truth though is that people judge you on your reputation, not on your character, just as they judge you from your appearance, not your weight. If your goal is to live a long, contented life, then certainly a good character is of import. However, maintaining a provocative and powerful appearance or reputation will grease the wheels of social life and gain you access to any mortal desire.
